Chads power into Second Round

St Chads hosted Kirkstall Educational from the Division above in the first round of the Waddilove Cup. A later start thanks to the Leeds 1/2 Marathon was greeted by beautiful sunshine and the ground in great condition. Eddie's stand-in skipper won the toss and elected to make first use of a cracking looking track.

Ben Lapworth and Mitch Lewis both bowled well with the new ball. Mitch taking three early wickets to reduce the visitors to 28-3. Kirkstall then looked to consolidate as Atiq Khan came into the attack to get through some quick overs (9 overs for 30) increasing the pressure and allowing Ben to pick up a deserved wicket. Skipper, Alasdair Fearns, then turned to to his spin twins to toy with the batsmen. Jamie, particularly enjoying seeing the batsman's eyes lighting up prior to the bamboozled look on their faces as the ball dipped, turned and bounced. Jamie Squires ended up taking 3-58 as the batsmen looked to be aggressive. Some strong death bowling from Sachin Nehra, Priyanga Gamage and Will Lander and Mitch (4-40) allowed Chads to restrict the total to 223 all out. A really good effort from everyone.

Rumours are Mitch and Chelsea did a really good tea, we will have to wait to read the Kirkstall match report to find out for sure though...

The Chads reply begun with Mitch and Alasdair, with Toybarn looking to be more aggressive (as the other approach has failed spectacularly so far this season). Having uppercut a 6 over point, Mitch picked out point trying to inflict some more damage, 31-1. Jack, playing his first game for the 1's this year came in at 3 and looked assured until snicking off to ex-Chad - Callum Oliver. N-Ewan and Toybarn then continued to chip away at the target, with some excellent batting. Having reached 50 and put one into the church gardens, Alasdair Fearns then tried to repeat the dose but fell to a catch in the deep for 55. Ewan MacNab maintained his excellent early season form with an assured 48, playing some exquisite late cuts and cover drives to the delight of the western terrace. He eventually fell to a well-directed straight ball from Barbadian, Rico Webb. Lower order contributions from Jamie, Sachin and Priyanga as well as a healthy looking extras column (Chads highest run scorer!) allowed the score to be chased down with 3 wickets and 6.3 overs to spare.

A good all round game and a great result. Chads move into the Second Round where they will face Tong Park Esholt at home on 4th June, all support welcome!

Man of the Match; Xavier Tras - an excellent contribution of 62 in a successful run chase.
TFC; Will Lander - for putting on a show Gary would have been glad to make the 5 hour round trip to watch.
