1. What are your nicknames at the club?
None that I can think of, at least not that people use to my face! I did get called "two pint Toby" for a while, long before I joined Chads, but I think my drinking abilities have improved a bit since then...
2. When did you join Chads and why?
I joined Chads back in 2021, having developed a cricket obsession in 2019. Covid lockdowns gave me a real desire to give the sport a go, and so finding Chads, which had several Saturday teams at the time as well as a host of other opportunities for new players to give cricket a go, was exactly the right fit for me.
3. Which other clubs have you played for?
I had quite literally never played cricket before joining Chads, so none!
4. What is your most memorable Chads match or moment?
Since most of my games played for Chads have been in the lower teams, all wins tend to stand out. In particular, the first win I was ever part of in my first season at the club was achieved with a team of just 8 players, and went right down to the wire (I believe the opposition only needed one or two runs to win when we took the final wicket), so that game has to take the honours.
5. Who are your all-time top three Chads players?
Kamran Khan - in a previous season which I spent a lot of as stand-in captain of the 4th team, Kam was always one of my most important players, both with bat and ball. I also can't talk about Kam without mentioning that the Bee Gees greatest hits are a permanent fixture in his car CD player, which makes for some very vibey drives to away games.
Ross Dell - similarly to Kam, Ross played a big part in a lot of games I captained in the 4th team, and has been getting better and better, making some big contributions in the 3s last yeah. I’ve also spent two excellent indoor cricket seasons playing with Ross, where’s he excelled in batting, bowling and even keeping wicket!
Dan Butterworth - a great guy and always keen for a post-match/training pint, a valuable asset for a club like Chads with such a strong social element. Unfortunately we’ve not played together much in recent years as he’s moved up the ranks, but he’s an excellent guy on and off the field.
6. What are your top three self-promotion facts?
I did a music production degree, so if anyone needs a song making I'm your guy.
I may have the worst statistics for anyone who’s ever won a captain’s player of the year award at Chads (21 runs at 2.33, no wickets in 2023).
I can juggle, but unfortunately there only tends to be one ball on the cricket field so that skill doesn't tend to come into play.
7. What tune would you most like to go out to bat to?
Denzel Curry's cover of 'Bulls on Parade' by Rage Against the Machine
8. Which sportsperson do you compare yourself to and why?
Mike Brearley - specialist captain. See my above-mentioned stats from last year...
9. What do you love the most about Chads?
Chads is a very friendly, social cricket club and has so many opportunities to play cricket, making it perfect for people who haven't played much cricket, or none at all in the case of myself when I joined, to get into the sport. That's not an easy thing to find, so I'm very grateful to Chads for that.
10. What is your favourite part of the Chads ground and why?
Short boundaries! But beyond that, I've always been a massive fan of how secluded the ground feels despite being in a fairly busy area, surrounded by just trees and the church. It really does feel like a little escape from the hustle and bustle of city life every time I'm down at the ground.
11. What one thing would you change about the club?
The main thing that springs to mind at the moment is getting the new pavilion finished, which will be huge for the club as it means there'll be a proper space for players from all teams to relax in before and after games. Given the voluntary work so many club members have put into it, seeing a brand new pavilion at the ground will be amazing.
