Player Profile - Lorna Upton's XI

St Chad's Broomfield CC18 Mar - 01:00

Today we hear from Club Secretary, Lorna Upton.

1. What are your nicknames at the club?

David Barnes sometimes calls me Lornz. Some go for Loz or Shearer. That’s about it - I’m usually the one that dishes out the nicknames!

2. When did you join Chads and why?

Joined July 2017 but didn’t really turn up until 2018 – the only road in Leeds I knew at the time was Otley Road and Chads was the only club on it.

3. Which other clubs have you played for?

South Northumberland CC, University of Leeds CC and the odd cameo appearance for the Leeds/Bradford MCCU team when they were utterly desperate. This year I’ll be debuting for the MCC!

4. What is your most memorable Chads match or moment?

Has to be my first tour to “the Paris of the North of England”, Southport. But honourable mentions to the Beer Festival, the Sixes Competition (and all the other social events), of course the 5th XI’s three wins in three at the end of 2022 (UTF!) and being the first woman in the Club’s history to win a senior trophy.

5. Who are your all-time top three Chads players?

There’s too many to name! So many people in the Club contribute to making it such a great place to be a part of, whether on-pitch or off it. But if I have to choose three…

Michael “Choccy Milk” Walters: Our overseas player in 2022 and leading 1st XI run scorer for the same year – a really top bloke who was greeted by typical snowy Northern weather on arrival and realised he might need more than shorts and t-shirts for cricket in England. Mikey fast became a key member of the Club and was always on hand to help out, be it coaching, captaining or anything else. We miss his company almost as much as Woodies miss his wallet.

Sarah “MOT” Carmody: Our EDI Officer and the Club’s biggest LUFC supporter. Sarah is one of the hardest-working, most generous and kind-hearted members of the Club. Not to mention one of the funniest friends (sometimes intentionally). She deserves all the Guinness.

Paul “Bez” Berry: Our Chairman and Mr Chad himself – Paul is infallibly passionate, ambitious and driven to guide our Club to bigger and better things. A jack of all trades (and master of most), he tries his hand at anything and everything from coaching and captaining to groundwork and project-managing the new pavilion. It just wouldn’t be Chads without Bez.

6. What are your top three self-promotion facts?

I was grilled live on Sky News by Mark Austin for four minutes in 2019 (I never mention it), I was the topic of discussion on TMS in 2016 over the course of three overseas tests and I work for the mighty Yorkshire CCC in the summer.

7. What tune would you most like to go out to bat to?

Tough one. This time I’ll go for Lady Marmalade – Christina Aguilera. (Also holds good memories of Dr Dan’s voice-controlled sound system game en route to Skipton away).

8. Which sportsperson do you compare yourself to and why?

Tuffers. We share the same style of athleticism. Or maybe it should be Boycott after my 24* off 40 overs…

9. What do you love the most about Chads?

The people (and the socials)! There’s a place for anyone and everyone. We’re a big family, even if a somewhat dysfunctional one at times.

10. What is your favourite part of the Chads ground and why?

After spending a lot of time in it the during the pavilion rebuild and when helping out on the ground, I’ll have to say the container – which doubled up as our site office, shelter, wardrobe, storage, kitchen and usually the base to listen to Popmaster on a weekday morning, with a cup of Bovril.

Honourable mentions for the new pavilion (specifically the tearoom) and the scorebox.

11. What one thing would you change about the club?

Create a “viewing deck” on the roof of the container – I’m thinking Far Headingley’s own Gabba set up.
